TUSS Study Week
In partnership with the Guidance Unit at the Tsabong Unified Secondary School (TUSS) and two current Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, KWEC worked to create an inaugural Tech and Revision Skills Week program which took place the week of July 24th. This week-long effort took upper secondary students through traditional study skills, understanding how to find effective resources, and the usage of two identified websites to supplement their learning and revision.
Fulbright ETA Ajani Martin Abascal exclaimed “Our older students have access to technology—specifically school-provided laptops—but they rarely use them as an aid for their education and instead see them as personal streaming devices for music and movies. In the study workshops we were able to expose the students to practical, online study tools and websites (like Khan Academy and Quizlet) with engaging activities and resources to support their learning outside of class. Many were eager to find content applicable to their coursework. I think this was a significant step in shifting the singular approach to technology that the students have.”
Students were also able to take individual time with all the presenters to look at different ways they could use their laptops at home for study and to set up cloud storage accounts using Google Drive.
Because they do not have access to laptops, lower secondary students focused on both traditional study methods and understanding how to be more active listeners and learners in class. Not only will these skills assist the students in their current learning, but also be used for the rest of their lives.
